what a watercolour should look like

This is a painting of my sister's... She is a watercolour artist and I felt the need to post one of her paintings so that anyone looking at my blog will know how nice watercolours CAN look! ;)

Having resolved to play with my new watercolour stuff, I'm fully prepared to turn out paintings that I know are not good while I get a grip on the medium. Usually if I know something is off or if I've made major mistakes I won't post the picture, but since I am trying to learn here, I'm going to be posting stuff that sucks. And believe me, I know it sucks! :P Here is just such a one: 2nd watercolour in 2 years, attempted wet on wet of a rose.
If you feel the urge to tell me what you think is wrong with it, knock your socks off, but chances are I already know. ;)

First watercolour in 2+ years

I did this watercolour over the past few days. Its the first time I've touched them in a long time, and they're pretty tricky. I made many, many mistakes, mostly in the order I put on colour. Hopefully I won't make the same mistakes again. ;) Its about 7x7 inches.

This is a totally new subject for me... I've never done water before really and now I'm attempting to do a piece that is entirely water and nothing else. Should be interesting. My style has of late been becoming tighter, and with a subject like this unless you're an incredibly anal retentive type person and have 200 hours to spare its impossible to be tight. So this should be a good way to loosen up. 8.5x11, Unison, Rembrandt, Artworks, and el cheapo pastels on Canson.

Well I've finally finished the rose pastel. Here it is:Approximately 14x11 inches, combination Unison, Rambrandt, Faber Castell, and various elcheapo pastels. Fabriano pastel paper.
