Something different...
I'm going to take a break from the regularly scheduled programming (or blogging) today to show you the woodstove we're getting. It's going to go right in the middle of our house, in the corner made by the stairs. Here it is:
It's a Pacific Energy Alderlea T5, designed for heating homes 2000 sq ft (like ours). It's cast iron, non-catalytic, and has two top parts that wing out so you can use it as a cooking stove in power failures (see insets above). I though that was just too pratical a feature to pass up in our part of the world. Below is the hole in our roof where the chimney goes up. Eventually there will be a chimney pipe going from there down to the stove, but for now we just have a hole.

Wow, your ceiling looks great.
Nice, practical stove. :) I love ours. Best purchase we ever made for the house.
That's cool and a great idea. I don't know if this is a large model but if I were you, I'd pay to get the largest model possible (in terms of firebox size). Especially since you're building around it. This will save you a lot of time splitting since many wood contractors don't split it fine enough to fit standard sized stoves and still get a decent burn. The ability to use bigger logs will also let you keep it burning longer overnight and while you're gone to work. Unfortunately, I think a consequence of your huge cathedral ceilings will be that the hot air will all collect and your peak and you'll have to rely on the stove's radiant heating rather than convection. Even in our living room's relatively small cathedral ceilings, there's a huge difference at ground level and standing on a ladder 8' up.
