Same boats - two paintings
These are two watercolours of the same scene - sailboats early in the morning on the Chesapeake Bay. I prefer the second one. Both versions however started as 11x15, but have been cropped to the most appealing composition. I prefer the second one.
Misty Morning I, 7 x 10 inches, 2008 Watercolour
Misty Morning II, 11x12 inches, 2008 Watercolour.I find all paintings of this sort of thing very difficult. The mistiness is easily ruined in watercolours. If you don't get the sky and mist right the first time, you won't get it at all.

Another watercolour...
Since moving to the new apartment, I've been really having fun with watercolours. Part of the reason for this is that my pastels haven't been unpacked yet! However, I have a pile of photographs that I intend to paint in watercolours over the coming weeks, and I'm having a blast doing so! This is from one of Poppy's photos (so thank you very much for letting me use it Poppy!) I'm pretty happy with this, however I think the back of the boat is too large. Oh well!
For the purposes of comparison I painted this same boat in February (6 x 8 inches) when I was just starting to play with my watercolours:
I think the form of the boat is better in the one from February, but the colours are better in the new painting.

Watercolour Work in Progress
I thought that since I haven't posted anything in a while I'd post a picture of the painting I've been working on. I'm about 2 or 3 hours in. It's watercolour, 12x16 inches, from a photo of my own I took in my mom's greenhouse. It was in September, and the greenhouse was filled with that thick tomato smelling fug. Mom probably had about 100 lbs of tomatoes in there on the vine, but these were by far the nicest looking ones. :)
